How To Scan & Email Documents On iPhone or iPad

Most people still don’t know that they are carrying a scanner in their pocket!

It’s true. Apple added the “scan to email” option years ago, but most people still don’t know that it not only exists, but is a much easier way to scan documents to an email than conventional scanning with a big, bulky scanner. Learning how to scan to email on iPhone & iPad can be a big productivity booster for those of us on the go. Read on to learn how.

Scan and attach a document to an email

You can scan a paper document and send it as a PDF.

  1. Tap in the email where you want to insert the scanned document
  2. Next, tap the Expand Toolbar button above the keyboard (to the right).
  3. Tap the Scan Document button above the keyboard.
  4. Position iPhone so that the document page appears on the screen—iPhone automatically captures the page. To capture the page manually, tap the Take Picture button or press a volume button. To turn the flash on or off, tap the Show Flash Settings button.
  5. Tap Retake or Keep Scan, scan additional pages, then tap Save when you’re done.
  6. To make changes to the saved scan, tap it, then do any of the following:
    • Crop the image: Tap the Crop button.
    • Apply a filter: Tap the Show Filters button.
    • Rotate the image: Tap the Rotate button.
    • Delete the scan: Tap the Delete Scan button.

You can also scan and file documents to your Documents folder

  1. Find the “Files” app on your iPhone or iPad. (If you can’t find it, you may need to go to the app store and download it, as you may have deleted it).
  2. Tap “iCloud Drive” or navigate to the folder that you want your scanned document to end up in.
  3. Tap the “circle with 3 dots in it” in the upper right-hand corner.
  4. Choose “Scan Documents”.
  5. Position iPhone so that the document page appears on the screen—iPhone automatically captures the page. To capture the page manually, tap the Take Picture button or press a volume button. To turn the flash on or off, tap the Show Flash Settings button.
  6. Tap Retake or Keep Scan, scan additional pages, then tap Save when you’re done.
  7. Name your document, and you’re done.

How To Scan Documents Using The Notes App

Many iPhone and iPad users don’t realize that Apple already includes a powerful built-in document scanner directly inside the Notes app. There’s no need to download a third-party scanner app or buy a bulky desktop scanner for most everyday tasks.

The Notes app can quickly scan:

  • – Paper documents

  • – Handwritten notes

To scan a document using the Notes app:

Open the Notes app on your iPhone or iPad.

Create a new note or open an existing note.

  1. Tap the paperclip icon or the camera icon.
  2. Tap Scan Documents.
  3. Position your document in view of the camera.
  4. Your iPhone will automatically detect and scan the page.
  5. Tap Keep Scan.
  6. Continue scanning additional pages if needed.
  7. Tap Save when finished.

How To Scan Multiple Pages Into One PDF On iPhone
